Get to know our graphic designer Manuel Flaetgen and learn where he’s from and what he’s doing at AdvantiDesign.
Since when have you been working for AdvantiPro / AdvantiDesign?
Manuel: I joined the team in the summer of 2014.
What are your tasks?
Manuel: By now my tasks vary so much that I gave up listing all of them a long time ago 😉 Aside from administrative and general office tasks, everything graphics-related finds its way to my desk: newspaper layouts, ads, flyers, logos and communication device creating, to mention a few.
What do you like most about your job?
Manuel: I am, and I assume so are most of my fellow sufferers, mainly controlled by audio-visual stimuli. That’s why I enjoy creating new things every day that will not only catch our customers’ eyes but also my own. Whether I’m creating something from scratch or editing already existing material, there are few things in life more satisfying than knowing one is satisfied with one’s own work.
What did you do before?
Manuel: My intermedia career began with NBC Europe in Cologne with an internship at the tv station GIGA Digital. It was followed by two years of a journalistic apprenticeship to become a tv-editor, accompanied by an apprenticeship to become a tv network planner. During those two years, I noticed that on top of my tendency to “write”, I had designing skills and a growing interest in it, too. This motivated me to autodidactically teach myself how to use Adobe’s Creative Suite. While I was given more graphic- and editing related tasks during my daily work for the network, I began a degree in multi media design by correspondence course. The rest is history, as they say. Only one year after being taken over by the pay-tv-network Premiere (later Sky), the studio in Cologne was closed. I took it as a sign to start a new adventure and devoted all my time to graphic designing.
What are your personal interests?
Manuel: Reading, horseback riding, swimming… no, just kidding! Even though the previously mentioned activities do seem interesting, I, as a child of the 80s and 90s, prefer spending the little free time I have with all sorts of computer games. Since that isn’t always feature-length entertainment, I also love watching good movies, and going to the cinema, or following the mainstream trend and binge watching: shows like The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones or Vikings support my mergence with the couch. On the weekends, especially during the warmer months, I love being outside: playing basketball, riding a bike, taking a stroll in the forest or just firing up the grill with friends. As a passionate designer, I am always hunting for new design trends and recent developments so I also spend a lot of my free time with internet research.
